Meeting a One-month Old Baby

Meeting a One-month Old BabyArya met a newborn baby this weekend.

While she’s met other babies before, we thought meeting a one-month old baby might be different for our daughter. Our 14-week old baby has never interacted with anyone younger than herself until yesterday.

I expected she would react differently to seeing a baby smaller than her. Arya didn’t care about the cute newborn and she spend the afternoon trying to get attention from the adults.

Hey, Diddle, Diddle by Salley Mavor – Book Review

Hey, Diddle, Diddle by Salley MavorHey, Diddle, Diddle by Salley Mavor is an illustrated book based on the familiar children’s nursery rhyme.

With many other books based on the same nursery rhyme, the success of Salley Mavor’s version is based solely on the pictures.

Mavor does not rely on hand drawings or color paintings common in other children’s books. Rather, she uses fabric to create the illustrations on each page.

Baby Stepping Reflex

Baby Stepping ReflexArya showed off her baby stepping reflex this weekend.

The stepping reflex is one of the primitive reflexes displayed by newborn babies.

In the case of our daughter, she likes to step off of adult thighs when being carried from her upper body. While she has shown the stepping reflex before, Arya never stepped as hard as she did yesterday afternoon.

Eating the Alphabet by Lois Ehlert – Book Review

Eating the Alphabet by Lois EhlertSince Arya enjoyed reading a different book by the same author, I figured she might like Eating the Alphabet by Lois Ehlert as well.

I was right.

My daughter loved staring at the pictures of food. She kept reaching out to touch the brightly colored fruits and vegetables.

Blue Spots on Baby’s Skin

Blue Spots on Baby's SkinMy daughter has big blue spots on her skin.

We first noticed blue spots on baby’s skin when we were at the hospital following her difficult delivery.

At first none of the blue spots were bigger than a quarter. Now, three months later, the largest of the blue spots are as big as my palm.

Where’s the Bear by Charlotte Pomerantz – Book Review

Where's the Bear by Charlotte PomerantzThe front cover of Where’s the Bear? by Charlotte Pomerantz shows a group of peasants hiding in the trees of a big forest. Each person is holding a different item as they peek out from behind the large trees.

Cute drawings and bright colors are usually enough to keep my baby’s attention.

Arya didn’t mind that Where’s the Bear barely has any text.

New Baby Formula at Three Months

New Baby Formula at Three Months - TubsArya turned three months earlier this week and we just switched to a new baby formula.

She was drinking Enfamil Newborn with a blue cover. Since she just finished that can we bought Enfamil Infant with a yellow cover as a replacement.

I thought the different baby formulas were just marketing by the companies. If parents throw away unused newborn formula as soon as their baby hits three months then the company sells more formula overall. But after reading the ingredient labels more closely I think there might actually be a difference in baby formula composition.

Urban Babies Wear Black by Michelle Sinclair Colman – Book Review

Urban Babies Wear Black by Michelle Sinclair ColmanThe front cover of Urban Babies Wear Black by Michelle Sinclair Colman has a cute baby dressed like a bank robber in a black outfit.

With his green shades and blue pacifier the baby is an amusing image for adults and a colorful focal point for little readers.

Any time my daughter likes the illustration on the front cover of a book she likes the rest of the book as well.

Bathing Baby in the Sink

Bathing Baby in the SinkI have started bathing baby in the sink.

Arya has a cute whale tub and a basic blue baby bath tub.

But since most of the baths I give her are as a result of my baby’s overflowing poop, I need the fastest, easiest way to get her clean. Setting up the whale tub for a bath takes too long since I use it to relax her while I’m in the kitchen and her blue tub requires me to get in the bath with her.

Bathing baby in the sink requires no special preparation or equipment.

Fish Eyes by Lois Ehlert – Book Review

Fish Eyes by Lois EhlertThe front cover of Fish Eyes by Lois Ehlert displays a smiling fish composed of six different colors.

Any baby book with a bright, colorful front cover is likely to be interesting for young babies.

The rest of the book is illustrated in similar style with multi-colored fish swimming through a blue background.
