Brown Bear Brown Bear What Do You See by Bill Martin Jr – Book Review

Brown Bear Brown Bear What Do You See by Bill Martin JrWhen packing for baby’s first road trip, we made sure to include some of her favorite books.

Arya loves reading Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See by Bill Martin Jr.

The colors, pictures, and sing-song text hold her attention throughout the entire book.

Since this weekend was baby’s first trip and baby’s first night away from home, we were concerned that Arya might be irritable or fussy. We made sure to keep her daily routine as close to normal as we could while staying at a bed and breakfast in the middle of the Vermont countryside.

Reading her favorite books was one way to help her get adjusted to her new surroundings.

She has loved Brown Bear Brown Bear What Do You See since we first read to her in the weeks after coming home from the hospital. Now that Arya is old enough to track objects and is coordinated enough to touch objects she is focusing on, she tries to touch all the pages of her favorite books.

Both the diverse color scheme and cute illustrations draw her attention throughout the book. She would actually prefer lingering on each page rather than moving to the next page, but we’ve been trying to actively avoid having her ever be bored while reading books.

So despite having seen the book a dozen times, Arya still tries to touch the animals on every page.

We have a newer edition of the book which was first published in 1967. The updated illustrations have better defined lines and a higher-contrast color scheme though the text and overall images remain the same. Multiple re-printings over four decades testifies to the enduring longevity of Martin Jr.’s book.

The illustrator, Eric Carle is the artist behind many of Arya’s other favorite books. While Carle’s drawings are the highlight of the book, simple, metered text by Bill Martin Jr. establishes a tempo for reading each page. Martin Jr. has a professional website with a list of his full bibliography and a picture of the first lady reading Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See to a group of school children.
