Memorial Day at Boston Common

Memorial Day at Boston Common - On Tummy By FlagsArya spent Memorial Day at Boston Common. Every Memorial Day weekend the Massachusetts Military Heroes Fund sponsors the placement of American flags at Boston Common.

The Flag Garden is located on the opposite side of the hill from the Frog Pond and faces the Boston Public Garden. Boston Common was crowded with tourists on this Memorial Day. Like us, most were looking to spend some time in front of the garden of American flags.

Memorial Day at Boston Common - Stroller by SignsThe Massachusetts Military Heroes Fund is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing support to families of falling Massachusetts military personnel. The fund provides for basic needs, community support, and emergency assistance to families located in Massachusetts.

Although ancillary to its primary mission, the Massachusetts Military Heroes Fund sponsors the placement of more than 33,000 American Flags at Boston Common for a week before every Memorial Day. One flag is placed for every death of a military service member from Massachusetts during Active Duty from the Civil War. While not as stirring as some images, the Flag Garden at Boston Common is still a moving sight on Memorial Day.

Memorial Day at Boston Common - With Daddy By FlagsMy ten-week old baby is too young to appreciate the meaning of Memorial Day. Arya treated it as another fun day in the park. She did especially like the colorful flags at eye level and the cool breeze.

Since my daughter had a great-grandfather who was an active-duty service member, she will eventually understand the meaning of Memorial Day. Just like many other babies whose parents blog, for now Arya just gets to enjoy the another spend a relaxing spring afternoon with her parents.
