Owen’s Marshmallow Chick by Kevin Henkes – Book Review

Owen's Marshmallow Chick by Kevin HenkesHaving just read a different book by the same author to my daughter, I decided to read her Owen’s Marshmallow Chick by Kevin Henkes.

As with all of his children’s books, Henkes combines colorful backgrounds, cute illustrations, and simple texts in this book.

Arya was still too young to appreciate books during baby’s first Easter, but Owen’s Marshmallow Chick will be a great book to read to her around each Easter.

Owen’s Marshmallow Chick tells the story of Owen, a cute gray mouse, and his Easter basket full of treats. Owen eats up all of his treats one-by-one until he decides his yellow marshmallow chick is his favorite for a different reason. Owen and the marshmallow chick enjoy the rest of the day together.

The text is surprisingly long for a book aimed at infants and toddlers with as many as 20 words on each page. Nevertheless, short words and predominantly simple vocabulary make the book a good choice for younger children. Henkes does introduce unique words involving Easter candy throughout the book.

The left side of each page is reserved for black text against a changing, colorful background. The right side displays a cute illustration.

Although the pictures are of consistent quality and in line with the story, most pages have few changes from the previous illustration. As Owen eats through his Easter basket his face, the contents of the basket, and the candy in his hands are the major differences from one illustration to the next. While fine for older children, most infants and toddlers will get bored through this section of the book without additional effort from an adult reader.

Arya did like most of Owen’s Marshmallow Chick, but it required extra effort to hold her attention through some pages. The book is good for introducing some new vocabulary to beginning readers or for discussing Easter candy. Younger babies may get bored through the middle sections of the text.

Owen’s Marshmallow Chick costs (including shipping) $6.99 new and $3.99 used from Amazon.
